Stafford Borough Council has made good progress in terms of its commitment to Equalities and Diversity over the past two years.
We are an active member of the Staffordshire Equalities Network which consists of representatives from the 8 District Councils, Police; Health; Fire and the third sector and over the years have produced joint Disability and Gender Equality Schemes.
The Equality Bill 2009, which was published in April of this year streamlines the law by distilling nine pieces of legislation into one single Act and creates a single new Equality Duty on public bodies. In response to this Stafford Borough Council has produced a draft Single Equalities Scheme which, addresses the statutory duties introduced by the following pieces of UK legislation;
It also sets out our commitment to diversity and equality under each of the equalities strands over the next three years:
This equality scheme is underpinned by a comprehensive Equality Action Plan which explains how we aim to implement the scheme, raise awareness and migrate over to the new Equalities Framework for Local Government. As an Authority we are currently at Level Two (self assessed) of the Local Government Association Equality Scheme and will migrate over to the new standard at Level One - Developing.
