Health and Wellbeing - Alcohol Awareness

7376_Alcohol_AwarenessMany of us often fail to recognise the damage we cause our bodies when we go out socialising or enjoy the odd tipple with our dinner.

There is nothing wrong with this if it done occasionally, however individuals who drink on a regular basis (every day or most days of the week) become at a much higher risk of ill health.

Chief Medical Officers recommend:-

  • Women should not regularly drink more than 2-3 units per day
  • Men should not regularly drink more than 3-4 units per day

Excessive amounts of alcohol can have severe effects on the body
including:-

  • Increased blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Increased risk of heart disease
  • Liver problems
  • Blackouts
  • Infertility

With so many different drinks and glass sizes, from shots to pints - not to mention bottles - it's easy to get confused about how many units are in your drink.

Drink Volume % Units
Bitter  1 pint  3.5%
Stella 1 pint 5%  3
Wine  125ml/250ml  12%  1.5/3
Spirits 35ml  40%  1.4

Not only do we have to watch our unit intake, but alcohol is also very high in calories. Drinks such as wine, beer and spirits have been found to hold the same calorie content as snacks such as sausage rolls, bags of crisps and cream cakes!
