Health and Wellbeing - Physical Activity

Physical inactivity has been described as the ‘silent killer of our time’. A lack of physical activity is one of the biggest causes of death and illnesses including coronary heart disease, obesity, diabetes, hypertension and many bone and joint problems.

People who are active are more likely to live longer, enjoy healthier lifestyles and remain independent.

It is recommended that everyone should be doing at least 150 minutes of moderate level activity per week. This can be broken down into short timeframes.

The activity should ideally be a mixture of low to medium intensity exercise including walking, housework, gardening etc and medium to high intensity exercise including aerobic and resistance based exercises.

Top tips to become more active:

  • Take the stairs rather than the lift
  • Park further away from the shops and walk
  • Increase the energy put into your housework
  • Explore new activities to do as a family
  • Have physical competitions with your children eg races, sit up competition
  • Wash the car by hand yourself
  • Do indoor activity when the weather is bad
  • Avoid labour saving devices eg remote control, electric mixers
  • Dance around while doing your chores

Activities include: Gym sessions, Swimming, Badminton, Squash, Tennis and Astro Turf courts and many fitness classes including Pilates, Spin, Circuits, Zumba and many more.
