The Borough Council has stepped up work to tackle litter in the area. A campaign has taken place warning people that they would be fined for environmental crimes. Keeping the borough clean costs local tax payers around £1 million every year and now the Council is to use
enforcement powers to tackle crimes such as littering, fly tipping and graffiti.
Drop Litter - Pick Up A £75 Fine
Posters such as the one below have gone up across the Borough, and leaflets have been distributed to businesses.
As of 3rd September 2007 litter louts face a £75 fine if they drop rubbish on local streets. The move followed a Borough council campaign, which included 'yellow cards' being given to people dropping litter warning them of the impending fines, and the distribution of cigarette and chewing gum pouches in
Stafford and Stone town centres, encouraging people not to throw their butts and gum onto the ground.
Cllr Stan Highfield, Cabinet Member for Environment and Health, said: 'We have been warning people who drop litter that they face fines if they continue to do so - that time has now come. People who take pride in their borough do not want it treated as a giant dustbin. We spend a lot of money keeping the area clean and tidy and we are determined that a small minority should not ruin it'.
In August 2007 the Council publicised the introduction of fixed penalty notices for people dropping litter. Part of the campaign included issuing 'Yellow Cards' to litter offenders. This warned them that from September 2007 if they were found discarding litter they would face a £75 on the spot fine.
Motorists who throw rubbish from cars are now being targeted as are fly tippers - who will face prosecution.
