Making skills as easy as 1,2,3
Date: 6 Feb, 2012
Stafford Borough Council has teamed up with Stafford College to run the 20-week programme which will be helping the mothers achieve qualifications.
The course is taking place at the Silkmore Children’s Centre in the town’s Penkside area. The initiative forms part of the Penkside Project which aims to tackle health and wellbeing issues for families in the Rickerscote and Silkmore areas.
The group of mums - all between 22 and 30 years old - will be working towards achieving reading and writing qualifications. While they study, their youngsters will be looked after at the children’s centre.
Stafford College lecturer, Emma Sennett, said, “We are really pleased that the local mums have supported this scheme and we hope it will encourage them to take up further learning or employment opportunities”
“The training will break down barriers to education and employment by letting people study in their own community with the benefit of having childcare provided by the centre.”
The Penkside Project has already introduced successful initiatives involving the whole community - for example the community caf?, cooking and healthy eating courses and community games.”
Councillor Patrick Farrington, cabinet member for community at the borough council, said: “I am pleased so many have come forward to take part in this pilot initiative. It is a great idea to offer young mums the opportunity to further develop their skills in a friendly environment.”
