A senior councillor is urging home owners and private tenants in Stafford Borough to take action now to ensure they stay warm and healthy this winter.

Stafford Borough Council has teamed up with local energy charity Marches Energy Agency to increase the number of people who could get help to make their homes warmer.

The criteria for people who may be able to get financial assistance has been widened and Councillor Jeremy Pert, Cabinet Member for Communities, said he wants to see the money being used to help local people.

The national pot can be used for a range of home improvements such as loft or cavity wall insulations, improving heating systems or other energy efficient measures

Now residents on less than a £21,000 household income – after paying their rent or mortgage – those with young children, households with less than £12,000 in savings and people with certain disabilities could be eligible for financial assistance.

The government initiative is funded by money from energy providers and grants will be on a first come, first served basis. People can apply through Warmer Homes Stafford which is a partnership between the council and Marches Energy Agency to implement the scheme.

Residents can find out more from www.warmerhomesstafford.org.ukor call the agency on 0800 677 1785.

Councillor Pert added: “Living in a cold home or property with poor energy efficiency can have a significant impact on people’s health and wellbeing and cause considerable hardship.

“So I’m urging anyone who thinks their home could benefit from heating or insulation measures or would like more advice on how to reduce their fuel bills to contact Warmer Homes Stafford immediately.

“This way we can ensure that as many people as possible in the borough live in a warm and healthy home this winter and are able to afford to heat their property effectively.”
