Second Adult Rebate is another way in which we can reduce the amount of Council Tax payable where someone who lives with the liable person is on a low income.
It is not calculated on the amount of income the liable person has but the amount of income a Second Adult has.
A Second Adult, also known as a non-dependant, must not be:
Entitlement can be either 25%, 15% or 7.5% of the bill depending on the income of the Second Adult. In some student cases the entitlement can be 100%.
For 2009/10 the figures are:
|
Second Adult in receipt of: Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance (Income Based), Pension Credit or Employment Support Allowance (Income Based) |
25% |
|
Students*
|
100% |
|
Second Adult Gross Income: Under £175.00 per week |
15% |
| Between £175.00 and £227.99 | 7.5% |
* the liable person for Council Tax must also be a student
* gross income over £227.99 means there will be no entitlement to Second Adult Rebate
If there is more than one Second Adult in the property then it is necessary to add their gross income together unless they are in receipt of Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance (Income Based) or Pension Credit.
Benefit is normally paid from the week after we receive your claim.
Once your claim has been worked out you will receive a notification letter informing you of any entitlement and how your benefit has been calculated. It will detail the income and savings we have used in determining your claim. Please take care to read through this information and check that all is correct - if anything is incorrect please contact us immediately.
If you are entitled to any Second Adult Rebate a revised Council Tax Bill will also be issued.
