What is Local Agenda 21?
-
What?
- The term Local Agenda 21 refers to the need to plan for and achieve sustainable development in the Twenty First Century.
-
Where?
- The Agenda 21 Treaty was signed by over 150 world leaders at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
-
Why?
- The Treaty, one of several important outcomes of the Conference, was a response to growing concern about our degrading environment and escalating poverty.
-
When?
- The term Agenda 21 was coined in 1992. Now over 7000 local governments in 64 countries have prepared or are preparing Local Agenda 21 Action Plans.
Nearly every local authority in the UK has a Local Agenda 21 Strategy as requested by the Government.
-
Who?
- Whilst national and local government involvement in Agenda 21 is essential, everyone in the community has a role to play, from schools to businesses, from church congregations to farmers and from neighbourhood groups to non governmental organisations.
In Stafford Borough Council officers and Members are working to support and encourage Sustainable Development in the community as well as within the Council.
-
How?
- Agenda 21 can take many forms, from developing an ongoing Action Plan with full community consultation, to running one-off events and activities, to changing the brand of coffee you drink!
Stafford Borough Council launched it's LA21 Strategy in July 2001 and has since carried out regular reviews and is now being replaced by a Sustainable Development Action Plan.
-
A Reminder...Sustainable Development is...
- 'development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'.
...its aim is to achieve a better quality of life for all. It achieves social and economic progress, whilst protecting and enhancing the environment.
