Why Go Green

The traffic on our roads is damaging our environment, our health and our economy. Reducing the amount of traffic as well as reducing the emissions caused by traffic will help to improve our quality of life and that of future generations. That's what Green Transport is all about!

The vast majority of traffic burns petrochemical fuel that release harmful pollutants into our air causing health problems, damaging our buildings and forming smog and low level ozone. The problem in towns and cities is becoming so bad on sunny days that the Air Quality Index is often quoted on weather forecasts to warn asthma sufferers! Burning petrochemicals also releases carbon dioxide into our atmosphere, contributing to instability and change in our global climate.

Traffic on our roads is continuing to increase. High traffic volumes are unpleasant in towns and through villages, often causing long delays in the 'rush hour'. The build up of traffic is draining our economy too; goods have to stay longer on the road, employees arrive late and aggravated and business journeys are prolonged - all held up in traffic jams!

Here, at Stafford Borough Council, 80% of people travel to work by car and three quarters of these travel alone. This is despite half of all journeys being less than 4 miles and only 20% of journeys being over 10 miles. This shows that there is a lot of room for improvement and these pages aim to help you identify how YOU can help by becoming a Green Transport user. It will give you information on bus routes and cycling facilities, tell you about our car sharing database and pool bikes and help you to become part of the solution rather than part of the problem!
