New York Report

CSD 10: the tenth session of the CSD (Commission on Sustainable Development) serves as the central organizing body for the Johannesburg Summit

GATS: General Agreement on Trade in Service, sets out international trade rules on services

Kyoto: UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

Local Agenda 21 (LA21): local plans of action for sustainable development for the 21st century as part of the Agenda 21 Treaty, signed at the Rio Earth Summit - tackling global problems at a local level

Major Group: Groupings of stakeholders identified in Agenda 21 (such as business and industry, farmers, local authorities, children and youth, NGOs and women) whose input is vital to the success of SD and will be at the Summit

Needs: Interpreted in Agenda 21, not solely in terms of economic interests, but also those of a fully functional, harmonious, global system that incorporates both people and eco-systems

NGO: Non-Governmental Organisation eg charities, faith groups etc.

Parallel Events: Additional events organised and managed by organisations and groups independent of the United Nations

Region: The UN World regions are Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, and West Asia

Sustainable Development (SD): Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. (Bruntland Report 1987)

UNDP: United Nations Development Programme

UNEP: United Nations Environment Programme

UNESCO: United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation

WHO: World Health Organisation

WTO: World Trade Organisation
