The Mayor was born in Wath Upon Dearne, Yorkshire, in December 1943. She was educated at Greasbrough Primary School and Southgrove Secondary School, where she was Deputy Head Girl and School Games Captain. In 1964 she married her first husband Howard and they moved to Stafford in 1976 to operate a greengrocery business. They fostered and then adopted Alex, who was a pupil at Walton Hall Special School. Howard died suddenly in 1991 - just 12 months after their adoption of Alex. They subsequently embarked upon a cleaning company which they still run. Ann's voluntary service has been as a Police Custody Visitor, a member of the Staffordshire Breakthrough Breast Cancer Group, Chairman of the Neighbourhood Watch Baswich Group, Governor of The Leasowes Primary School, a member of the Baswich Community Group (in an advisory capacity), and a member of Speedwatch. Ann is also a member of the Rotary Club of Stafford Knot which she joined in 1996. She was President of the Club in 2003/04. Ann was elected to Stafford Borough Council in 1999, representing the Baswich Ward. She has held the position of Chairman of the Environment and Health Scrutiny Committees in 2007/2008, and has served on the Development Control Committee, Employee Appeals Committee, Sir Richard Leveson Charity, Cooksons Charity and Sustainable Staffordshire. Ann is a people person who enjoys meeting, talking and helping people in whatever way she can. She cannot stand abuse to children and animals and aims to ensure all vulnerable people within our society are better protected. She enjoys nothing more than taking her granddaughter and her labrador for walks on Cannock Chase. |
