Register of Electors

(also known as the Voter's roll, Electoral roll and Electoral Register)

The Electoral Register is a listing of all British, Commonwealth, Irish and EU Community citizens who are eligible to register to vote at elections.  If you do not register you will not be able to vote.

You are not automatically registered, even if you pay Council Tax.

How do you Register to Vote?

Each autumn, the Electoral Registration Officer conducts an audit of all known residential properties in the Borough.  The qualifying date is 15 October.  Once the information has been received it will be used to form the new register published on 1 December.

To ensure that you are registered, and continue to remain so, you must provide the information.

Rolling Registration

Legislation changed in February 2001, the register is now updated monthly for additions, deletions and any amendments.

If you have moved address since the annual canvass was carried out in September/October you can register at your new address by completing the ER3(Rolling Registration Application Form).

To be entitled to vote at the forthcoming Elections you need to apply by March 2007.

Please remember if you are not registered you will not be able to vote.

Even if you have informed Council Tax about your changed details they cannot alter the Electoral Register for you.  The law does not allow this to happen.  You will need to notify the Elections Office.

To check if you are on the Electoral Register, it is available for inspection at the Second Floor Reception, Civic Centre, Riverside, Stafford.

Monday to Thursday 8.30 am to 5.00 pm
Friday 8.30 am to 4.30 pm

Telephone No:  01785 619424

Two Versions of the Register of Electors

There are two versions of the Register of Electors, the 'Full'' version and the 'Edited' version.

You can choose whether or not your details appear on the Edited register by ticking the opt-out box on your annual canvass form or the edited registered box on your ER3 Form.

Full Versions

The 'Full' version is open to public inspection but under supervision by the Electoral Office.  It is used for elections, preventing and detecting crime and checking applications for credit.

Edited Version

The 'Edited' version is available for general sale and used for any purpose such as marketing.
