Biodiversity
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on our planet.  This includes the whole range of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibian, fish, invertebrates, plants, fungi and micro-organisms.  Biodiversity also includes the habitats that support these species.

Biodiversity Convention
In June 1992, the 'Earth Summit' was held in Rio de Janeiro.  Over 150 countries, including the UK, signed the Convention on Biological Diversity.  The main aim of the Convention was to commit governments to conserve and enhance biodiversity

Coppicing
The traditional form of management of much of the broadleaved woodland in the UK.  It involves cutting down trees and shrubs near to ground level, allowing the tree to re-grow from the stump, and re-cutting at intervals of one or more decades to provide long straight poles.

Earth Summit
Officially the 'United Nations Conference on Environment and Development', this was a milestone event at which leaders met in response to growing concerns about our degrading environment and the increasing poverty gap.

Ecological Footprint
The amount of productive space (land, sea, forest etc.) required to provide for the consumption of natural resources by an individual, city, country etc.   WWF have calculated that the Earth has around 11.4 billion hectares of productive space, which works out at an area of 1.9 hectares for each of the 6 billion people on the planet - but our average ecological footprint is 2.3 hectares each!

A place in which a particular plant or animal lives.  Often used in a wider sense, referring to major assemblages of plants and animals found together e.g. heathland.

Home Energy Conservation Act.  This Act has provided an impetus for local authorities to work towards improving energy efficiency in housing.  Stafford Borough Council has a Home Energy Conservation Strategy to achieve reductions in energy consumption across all tenures.

The Local Agenda 21 Treaty was signed by over one hundred and fifty world leader at he 'Earth Summit' in Rio in 1992.  The term 'Agenda 21' refers to the need to plan for and achieve sustainable development in the 21st Century

Local Plan
Local Plans are documents which provide guidance on the future pattern of land use.  The Stafford Borough Local Plan 2001 aims to balance the need for development with protecting and enhancing the environment

Lowland Heathland

SRB - Single Regeneration Budget
The Government's Single Regeneration Budget is cash earmarked to help areas recover from major economic and social problems, such as large scale redundancies.  The Borough has successfully bid for £5 million which will strengthen the economic base of the Borough, securing investment and new jobs.

SSSI
Site of Special Scientific Interest
An area of land notified under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as being of special nature conservation interest.  The SSSI designation applies throughout the UK.  Sites are notified by the appropriate country conservation agency e.g. English Nature.

Staffordshire Biodiversity Action Plan (SBAP)
 Staffordshire's Local BAP.  The SBAP identifies priority habitats and species in the County, setting targets for their conservation and enhancement and outlining the mechanisms for achieving these targets.

Sustainable Development
Sustainable development is usually defined as 'development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'.  It aims to ensure a better quality of life for all, both now and in the future.  It is development which achieves social and economic progress at the same time as protecting and enhancing the environment.

Sustainability Indicators
A series of indicators that enable us to measure progress towards or away from sustainability.

Sustainable Staffordshire
This is a forum supported by local authorities, statutory bodies, business, colleges and universities, non-governmental organisations and individuals.  Its aim is to help build a more sustainable Staffordshire.
