Farm-School Link Education Pack

Where does your food come from? Most of us don't know!

The Farm - School Link initiative brings together local farmers and schools to share information and to encourage increased understanding of the local farming industry.  It aims to help both our children and local communities appreciate the complex links that exist in getting everyday foods, such as a slice of bread, from the farm to their plate.  In doing so it will help them to see how they can become more responsible consumers, by choosing healthier and more environmentally friendly food and food production options.

Sustainability issues revolving around food production, processing, transport, sale, end use and disposal will be explored.  Emphasis will be on the real life impacts of farming today, both for farming families as well as the wider community and our environment and economy.

We make particular reference to grain production, which has shaped many parts of our culture, provides the staple food of millions and is an important UK crop.

With an emphasis on practical activities, the Farm - School Link initiative also encourages schools to involve their neighbourhoods in the project.  Some suggestions on how to do this are given in the Appendix.

The 'Farm - School Link' Education Pack has been designed for 'off the shelf' use, to help subject co-ordinators and other teachers meet the requirements of the national curriculum.  A checklist of national curriculum areas covered is given in the Appendix. The pack will be useful in helping to plan either 'mini-topics' or a series of themed lessons. A number of classroom-based activities are suggested in the pack.  Each of these can be used as discrete, 'stand alone' activities or as a series of linked activities.

These teaching resources have been designed for use in Primary Schools.  Opportunities for extension work are included, however, which will make the pack relevant to lower Secondary Schools.

Additional material and information is available from a variety of sources and a list of these is given at the end of the pack.

Farm-School Link Education Packs are available for a cover charge of £10 from Karen Davies, Local Agenda 21 Co-ordinator, Stafford Borough Council, Civc Centre, Riverside, Stafford, ST16 3AQ. T: 01785 619408
