Victoria Park Celebrates it's Centenary in 2008

One hundred years ago, Stafford's Victoria Park started to take shape.  The Borough Council's Edwardian forefather bought and improved around four acres of marshy land to create the original park which was proudly named the "Victoria Pleasure Grounds."

The park was designed to include the River Sow and many of the original paths, trees and flower beds laid out at that time are still evident today.  The first guest in the new "Pleasure Grounds" was Town Mayor Alderman John Mottram whose name was immortalised in the Alderman Mottram shelter which still stands today overlooking the railway station.  Soon the park started to grow . . . more acres were added, a bowling green was laid out to complement the bandstand and the Coronation Bridge built to link the two parts.  In the 1930's more land was included to make room for tennis courts and a children's paddling pool. But the park has also seen some darker moments . . . in 1983 the thatched sports pavilion caught fire withfiremen having to pump water from the river in a bid to save it!

External organisations also hold events throughout the year in our parks and open spaces. If you are interested in booking your own event please call 01785 619589 or email bookings@staffordbc.gov.uk
