Applications for Listed Buildings
What is the service?
Determination of applications for 'Listed Building Consent'.
Information
Over 900 buildings and structures in the Borough are 'listed' as being of special historic or architectural interest by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
Listed Building Consent is required from the local planning authority to carry out any works of demolition, alteration or extension to Listed Buildings that would affect the character of the building. This applies to the whole of the building, inside and out, and often includes boundary walls or ancillary structures within the grounds. Relatively minor works such as painting windows, plastering internal walls or removing a fireplace, can also require consent.
It is a criminal offence to carry out work to a listed building without first obtaining Listed Building Consent from the planning authority. It is always best to check whether your proposals need consent before commencing any works to a listed building.
The Council seeks to ensure that new works to listed buildings are in character with the old, whether a large extension or a new window. You are advised to use an architect with experience in dealing with listed buildings, and to discuss your proposals with the Conservation Officer before submitting any application.
