Achieving local sustainable construction

Link: Conference Flier

From giant improvements in energy efficiency, to green rooves, from using materials with recycled content, to incorporating renewable energy technology, from new building regulations, to customer demand, the construction industry is facing and embracing new challenges.

In response to these challenges local organisations in Stafford Borough are organising a Conference on Sustainable Construction - with an impressive line up of top speakers.

Invitations are going out to local housing associations, planners, developers, architects, builders, businesses and local authority officers and members for this free one-day conference which will be held at the Gatehouse Theatre on 3rd April 2006 from 9.30 to 15.30.

The Conference is being organised by local campaign group, Sustainability Matters in Stafford Borough, with support from Stafford Borough Council. Other key partners include Staffordshire County Council and the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. The aim of the Conference is to encourage local decision makers and those in the building industry to take the sustainable construction option in housing and commercial buildings.

The keynote speaker for the event is Yvette Cooper, MP from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Other speakers include those from national organisations such as Gaia Research, the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and Waste Recycling Action Programme (WRAP) as well as local organisations such as the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and Staffordshire County Council.

Lead organisers, 'Sustainability Matters in Stafford Borough' is a well known, active voluntary group, which aims to promote and achieve sustainable development in Stafford Borough. Representing the group, Roger Oldfield said 'We face a wide range of local and global environmental issues - depletion of resources, climate change, loss of biodiversity, increasing consumerism. By putting into practice sustainable construction techniques, we can ensure buildings today will meet the needs of people tomorrow - and won't cost the earth'.  Working in partnership with Sustainability Matters is Stafford Borough Council, whose Local Agenda 21 Co-ordinator, Karen Davies added, 'This Conference is an important event for Stafford and is an important opportunity for a range of professionals to learn about sustainable construction, which is moving quickly up the agenda for the construction industry'.
