Green Trasport Strategy

A Green Transport Plan for Stafford Borough Council Staff and Members | pdf | html |

Stafford Borough Council's Green Transport Strategy aims to make a real difference to the way people use transport at the Council by adopting more environmentally friendly forms of travel.

It aims to encourage sustainable solutions to transport problems and, by doing so, improve quality of life for this generation and those who will follow us.

Stafford Borough Council's Green Transport Strategy is a way in which the authority hopes to influence the travel habits of its staff. It will also act as an example to other major local employers who, we hope, will be encouraged to follow suit. The Strategy will help us all to make more informed choices about how we travel - whether commuting to work or travelling on business.

'If we can all try to modify our travel habits only
slightly, then we can make a real difference.'

Why have a Green Transport Strategy?

In 1997 there were almost 27 million vehicles in use on Britain's roads. Forecasts suggest that by the year 2020 there could be as many as 32 million cars on the roads. Over the last decade average daily traffic flows on our road system have increased by between 20% and 40%, severely disadvantaging everyone. In 1996 the C.B.I stated that traffic congestion was costing the British economy £19 billion per year.

Road traffic poses serious threats to the health of the planet too. It produces 88% of the UK's carbon monoxide and accounts for at least 20% of UK emissions of carbon dioxide.

But the picture is not all gloomy. Nationally, 30% of all car journeys are less than two miles and 72% are under five miles2 . There is therefore potential for a substantial modal shift in transport patterns.

Green Transport Strategy Implementation

The Green Transport Strategy aims to encourage people to switch away from unnecessary car use. It includes a series of initiatives which bring benefits to our environment, our economy and our society and explains how we can all become more sustainable when we travel.

Amongst many other things, the Strategy includes initiatives to:-

  • encourage 'car sharing'
  • change work patterns to reduce car journeys
  • develop the use of greener fuels
  • encourage cycling and walking to work by improving facilities
  • encourage cycling at work by making pool bikes and electric bikes available
  • encourage cycling by implementing loans and discounts for bikes and equipment
  • inform staff about all the transport options that are available

The Green Transport Strategy will be thoroughly monitored by regular Staff Travel Surveys and other robust monitoring systems.

We are determined to make this Green Travel Strategy work. The involvement and commitment of all our staff will be essential. Every individual contribution is valuable - the smallest change in travel habits by a large number of people can have a major impact on the negative effects of transport on our health, economy and environment.
