What colour is Climate Change? That's what the movers and shakers in Staffordshire want to know.

Our County, Our Climate, Our Choice

It may sound like a silly question, but it is all part of a major move to get the people of Staffordshire involved shaping future responses to what is the greatest challenge of the coming decade.

Staffordshire's leading organisations, including community groups, the emergency services and the universities, have got together to create common ground in tackling climate change.

Staffordshire County Council's climate change champion Councillor Terry Dix said climate change involved everyone.

"There's no opting out on this one. We are all involved, like it or not. It is a global issue and a very local and personal one. Our reactions and responses are vital in understanding how we as a community can work together.

"It's our county, our climate, our choice. That's why everyone's views are important. We need to know what makes Staffordshire people tick when it comes to tackling climate change," he said.

And to get the debate going they want people to explore their reactions to the whole climate change issue as part of the Our County, Our Climate, Our Choice debate - otherwise known as OC3.

Between January and April 2008 the partners will start a big ask - going back to basics so that people can debate what it means for them and for their families. The discussions will be fun informal affairs with no preconceived ideas getting in the way of people speaking their minds.

"It's amazing what comes out when people get really interested. Come along and have a good time. These first meeting are just the seed corn. Who knows where it could lead." Councillor Dix said.

Immediate reactions and responses will help the partners understand motivations, and will create communities of interest and networks - key to effective future action in Staffordshire.

The discussion groups will be in the evening (generally 6 and 8pm)

  • Stafford Gatehouse Theatre - 14th Jan
  • Tamworth and Lichfield College , Tamworth - 21 January
  • South Staffordshire, Rodbaston College - 23 January
  • East Staffordshire ,  Heath House Training and Conference Centre - 29 January
  • Cannock Chase, Chase Leisure Centre - 30 January ( 6.30 to 8.30pm )
  • Lichfield , the Guildhall - 4 February
  • Newcastle College - 7 February
  • South Moorlands Leisure Centre - 11 Feb

Any group which would like to hold their own discussion and feed their fascinating results into the big debate can contact the team for a do it yourself pack on 0845 366 6700.

The team has also set up a website so people can get involved at a personal level - just go to www.staffsoc3.co.uk and answer the questions.
