Cycle Routes Volunteer Work Party - Sunday 20th January - Isabel Trail, Stafford
A group of eager volunteers will be braving the weather this Sunday (20 January) to help cut back overgrowing foliage and clear away dead leaves from a local cycle route.
The Stafford Cycle Route Volunteers will be working along the Isabel Trail through Doxey Marshes and Nursery Lane. The group will meeting at the Doxey Road entrance to Sainsbury's car-park at 10:00am and working along the route all morning.
Anyone wishing to help out should wear suitable work clothing and be aware that the area might be muddy and wet after recent rain. Tools will be provided.
Volunteers are encouraged to come along and join the party. "We start at 10 in the morning and carry on until lunchtime", said Sustrans Ranger Terrance Strickland, "but people can come along and just do an hour or so if they're free. It not only helps keep the cycle routes clear for cyclists and walkers but it's great exercise too".
The work of the Cycle Route Volunteers was recognised recently when they received a Staffordshire Green Award after coming second in the Stafford Borough Council Green Awards Community Category. The Green Awards recognise and celebrate local organisations that demonstrate good environmental and sustainability practice.
Stafford's traffic free cycle routes are a great boon to local cyclists and visitors alike. As part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network the Greenway and the Isabel Trail have both undergone resurfacing work recently but to keep them tidy and clear from overgrowing trees and plants they require regular attention. Local Volunteers carry out some of this work with regular work parties.
A small team of dedicated volunteers, made up of local Sustrans Rangers and members of the Stafford Borough Council Cycling Working Group, regularly get together to tackle a section of local cycle route. The team uses tools provided by Sustrans and the Borough Council's Local Agenda 21 programme for sustainable development.
Previous work parties have cleared litter and fly tipping from along the Isabel Trail, widened Castle Street and cut back foliage along the Greenway from Stafford to Haughton.
Sustrans is the UK's leading sustainable transport charity and is responsible for the National Cycle Network (NCN).
The Stafford Borough Council Cycling Working Group is part of the Council's Local Agenda 21 programme to implement Sustainable Development and improve quality of life for everyone both today and in the future. More information can be found at www.staffordbc.gov.uk/la21.
