Breaking the Silence

On March 4th Stafford Gatehouse Theatre will be host to an unusual and timely theatrical production - a play about Rachel Carson, a remarkable woman who was a critical figurehead in the birth of the environmental movement worldwide.

The play, "Breaking the Silence" was written to mark the centenary of her birth in 2007, and has been described as "an absorbing theatrical experience - illuminating, enlightening and very powerful".

Rachel Carson was a scientist, writer and ecologist who single-handedly challenged the US government and agro-chemical industry in her ground breaking book "Silent Spring" published in 1962. This book was the inspiration and is now the classic text of the environmental movement. No single book has done more to awaken and alarm the world than "Silent Spring".

Rachel's pioneering voice spoke, from a scientific perspective, to expose the effects of indiscriminate use of insecticides, of the destruction of wildlife and of man's progressive poisoning of his own habitat. The book remains a classic statement, which founded a whole movement and continues to focus concern.

So many of the concerns expressed by Rachel Carson in "Silent Spring" reverberate today, as man's activities stretch environmental limits and the natural functioning of our planet is threatened. It is time to listen, as if for the first time, to what she has to say.

This new one-woman play, written and performed by Liz Rothschild, draws us in to the very centre of this complex, vulnerable but courageous personality.

Tickets are on sale now at the Stafford Gatehouse Box Office, and cost £5.50 (£4.50 concessions).

Stafford is well known for being a hotbed of environmental activity and interest - so buy your ticket soon!

Breaking the Silence is being arranged by Sustainability Matters in Stafford Borough in partnership with Stafford Borough Council, as part of its sustainable development programme.
