Council Commuters Cut their Carbon
Link: Cycling in Stafford Borough
Stafford Borough Council and Staffordshire County Council are teaming up to help cut carbon and congestion by offering a free breakfast to staff commuting to work using green transport.
The Green Commuters Breakfast takes place on 18 June (7:30am -10am) at the new Stafford Leisure Centre and eco-friendly travellers can also get a free swim to cool off after their journey, have their bike checked by Dr. Bike and have a personal health check.
As an extra incentive Stafford Leisure Centre are also giving attendees a free gym pass.
The event, which is part of Bike Week, the UK's biggest annual promotion of cycling, hopes to encourage public sector workers to get out of their cars and try a more sustainable way of travelling to work.
By holding the Breakfast at the Stafford Leisure Centre and making use of its excellent facilities organisers are aiming to get people walking and cycling to work as a way of improving their health too.
Whilst staff from all public sector organisations in Stafford are invited to the Breakfast anyone living in the Weeping Cross and Baswich area is invited to come along on two special led cycle rides that will be arriving in Stafford for a free breakfast at the event.
The Baswich Cycle Route led rides leave Baswich Co-op store, Farmdown Rd and The Lynton Tavern, Weeping Cross at 8.00 a.m. and again at 9.00 a.m and will be picking up more riders along the way.
The led rides coincide with the launch of a special pocket map of the Baswich Cycle Route that is being distributed in the area to encourage more people to avoid the roads and use the quiet, picturesque route for their journey to work.
Public Sector organisations in Staffordshire are working in partnership to cut carbon emissions through the Local Area Agreement. Road transport (not including motorways) in the county produces over 1,700,000 tonnes of CO2.
The Green Commuters' Breakfast is organised by Stafford Borough Council's Sustainable and Healthy Communities Team, which supports sustainable development initiatives and works in partnership with all sectors of the community to improve quality of life for present and future generations, and Staffordshire County Council's Sustainable Travel team.
