COUNCIL PLEDGE A BETTER FUTURE
link: West Midlands Biodiversity Pledge
Stafford Borough Council has become one of the first authorities to put their name to a pledge to enhance conservation.
The council is one of only ten local authorities in the region to have signed the West Midland's Biodiversity Pledge.
The signing puts Stafford Borough Council at the forefront in protecting the area's environmental heritage. It also recognises the work the council has already done on protecting and enhancing local wildlife in the area.
Recent examples include the opening of Local Nature Reserves at Ferndown and Kingston Pool as well as bringing back cattle to graze on Barlaston Common as part of an environmentally friendly land management scheme.
New legislation requires local authorities to play a key role in conserving biodiversity through the introduction of policies and strategies. And on Wednesday (July 9) Councillor Stan Highfield signed the 'Pledge' on behalf of the Council.
Councillor Highfield, Cabinet Member for Environment and Health, said: "Biodiversity is very important in its own right. Recently we have named new local nature reserves and only last month we reintroduced cattle to manage land in the Fulford area.
"Signing this pledge demonstrates the commitment the Council has made to protect and enhance the local environment - putting it at the top of its agenda with the aim of providing a better quality of life for everyone both now and in the future."
The other signatories to the pledge were:
Worcestershire County Council
Staffordshire County Council
Herefordshire County Council
Lichfield County Council
Staffordshire Moorlands District Council
Newcastle Borough Council
Warwick District Council
Wychavon District Council
Peak District National Park Authority
