Benefit Investigations

Fraud comes in many different forms and fraud committed against us affects the way we pay for services.

    Housing Benefit Fraud

The DWP (Department for Works and Pensions) is responsible for investigating Housing Benefit Fraud.  Any suspected Housing Benefit fraud should be reported directly to the DWP.

Stafford Borough Council has the responsibility for investigating the following types of fraud:

    • Council Tax Single Person Discount Fraud - Anyone liable to pay Council Tax who is the only adult over 18 living in the property, is entitled to claim 25% discount of their annual Council Tax charge.  If you are aware of a property where the resident may be receiving this discount but there is more than one adult living in the property, please let us know and we will investigate it.

    • Council Tax Reduction Scheme Fraud - The Council Tax Reduction scheme is run by us for the benefit of those on low incomes to assist in paying Council Tax.  This scheme replaced the old Council Tax Benefit Scheme.  People on this scheme have an obligation to notify us of changes that take place which could affect their entitlement, but some fail to do so.  If you suspect anybody, please tell us.

Our investigation team are highly trained officers with many years of experience.  We depend on members of the public reporting suspicions and take every one seriously.  So if you suspect anybody of committing fraud against us then please report it.

It is your money and your services that are at risk so please report it to us.
