    About the awards

    Our Community Awards are open to individuals, community groups, schools, voluntary sector organisations, community interest companies and public or private organisations working hard to contribute to the wellbeing of their community.

    Applications should demonstrate activities and action which help improve community wellbeing and quality of life of local people. These activities will support the Council’s aims of providing a safe, clean attractive place to live and work, encouraging people to be engaged in developing strong communities and promoting good health and wellbeing.

    Organisations and individuals should be based or live within Stafford Borough and all projects should have taken place within Stafford Borough in the last 12 months.


    How to enter

    We can only accept one application per project. If a person or organisation is involved in additional projects in partnership with others, a different organisation must be named as the submitting body. Entries must describe projects or activities that have been implemented within the last twelve months; they should be well presented, clear and comprehensive.

    The application form must be filled out in full and include:

    • The contact details of the project leader (if you are nominating on behalf of someone you must have gained their consent to do so and ticked the box on the form).
    • The title of the project.
    • A description of the project.
    • Answers must be provided for every question.

    You can also include up to five photographs in support of your application.

    Judging Criteria

    Entries will be judged by a panel of partners, who work with us, who will select winners and highly commended for each category as well as choosing the winner of the judges award. If a high number of applications are submitted, they may be shortlisted before being sent to the judges.

    The judges reserve the right to move applications received into more suitable categories if they believe they are a better fit and also, to add additional categories if required.

    Sports and Leisure

    Open to clubs and groups who encourage participation from diverse groups, working to keep our communities active and supporting their volunteers.

    Judging Criteria

    1. Shows a commitment to attracting a diverse audience to participation (including those with disabilities, long terms health conditions, ethnically diverse communities, LGBTQ communities, women and girls and those facing economic hardship).
    2. Nurtures local talent to start, stay and succeed / recognised by peers for excellence and role models in development.
    3. Adds value to the local community for example by increasing social interaction and participation.
    4. Provides safe, equal and inclusive opportunities for all eg no or low barriers to entry.

    Community Learning

    Open to schools, organisations and individuals who are organising or participating in all types of learning (formal / informal / non-formal) within Stafford Borough.

    Judging Criteria

    1. Opportunities that demonstrate learning and the positive outcome in the local community from that learning.
    2. Supporting people in changing their life or participating in learning that improves their life ie upskilling, further development, mentoring, creating renewed sense of purpose, being recognised as ‘best in class’ on a wider stage.
    3. Opens up opportunities for individuals and groups to connect with each other and create new ways of working for example those who are digitally excluded.
    4. Provides safe, equal and inclusive opportunities for all.

    Sustainable Environments

    Open to groups who have demonstrated a commitment to delivering sustainability initiatives which will help to combat climate change or enhance the natural environment. For example, through tree planting, encouraging recycling and minimizing waste, and implementing measures to reduce carbon emissions.

    Judging Criteria

    1. Demonstration of contributing to climate action being delivered in the local area. This could include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the delivery of climate adaptation measures, active travel initiatives.
    2. Protecting and enhancing the local biodiversity.
    3. Increasing awareness of sustainable environment issues within the community.
    4. Providing safe, equal and inclusive opportunities for all.

    Social Wellbeing

    Open to individuals or groups who can demonstrate that they improved the general wellbeing of others in their local community and in particular how they have encouraged participation from groups or individuals not usually accessing services. For example this can include providing someone to talk to, holding luncheon clubs and providing shopping services.

    Judging Criteria

    1. Improves physical and/or mental health and wellbeing.
    2. Provides opportunities for individuals of all ages to connect with each other to improve social wellbeing.
    3. Encourages participation from hard to reach groups and digitally excluded.
    4. Provides safe, equal and inclusive opportunities for all.

    Community Action

    Open to groups or organisations who have delivered projects to support their community and/or improve the local area. For example holding arts festivals, providing advice and support services to vulnerable groups, youth activities.

    Judging Criteria

    1. Mental and physical health and wellbeing impact.
    2. Sustainable within the local community for the long term.
    3. Enhanced community networking.
    4. Provides safe, equal and inclusive opportunities for all.

    Local Hero

    Open to any individual who can demonstrate excellent projects delivered in their community improving sustainability, community or social wellbeing.

    Judging Criteria

    1. Has consistently gone above and beyond.
    2. Can demonstrate improvement/ benefit to the wider community.
    3. Improves social wellbeing.
    4. Can demonstrate long term sustainability.
