Beat the Winter Blues and save on your energy

Help is available to ‘Beat the Blues’ with free advice and support through Warmer Homes Stafford.

January is traditionally seen as a tough time for households as seasonal depression factors such as the distance from Christmas and payday, bad weather and bills coming in combine to make it arguably the gloomiest month of the year.

And with borough residents feeling the pinch at this time of the year – local people are being encouraged to take positive steps by getting energy bills under control, ensuring they are getting a good deal from their supplier and are receiving all the discounts and support they are entitled to.

Often people don’t know they can save hundreds of pounds by changing electricity or gas supplier. Rural households who rely on oil or LPG gas heating may also be able to find better deals by joining bulk-buy or discount clubs.

And many households could still be eligible for a £140 discount from their energy supplier, but must act fast. Once energy companies reach their targets, discount schemes close, although many are still open for applications. The Warmer Homes Stafford team are encouraging low income households to contact the advice line without delay, to see if they qualify.

Callers to the council’s Warmer Homes Stafford service often say that January is a worrying month for them, particularly in relation to their energy and utility bills.

Helen Batty, Home Energy Advisor at Warmer Homes Stafford, said:

“We welcome calls from people who are finding that they are spending more than they have coming in. People often feel a lot better once they have reviewed their energy spending.  Accessing a grant, discount or switching supplier can even mean they can budget to heat their home adequately during colder months”.

Grants are also available for heating and insulation improvements – delivering £1000s in funding to low income households with no central heating or broken heating systems.

Throughout the year Warmer Homes Stafford can offer free and impartial advice to all residents across the Borough via Freephone 0800 677 1785. For those who need additional support regarding their energy bills and tariffs, or for those with additional needs, a home visit can be arranged.
