More than one million pounds will be available next month (June) to small businesses in Stafford Borough who have not been covered by existing grant schemes.

The new scheme will include businesses who share an office or managed workspaces. Applications for a share of around £1.3 million funding are due to open in June.

Councillor Mike Smith, Cabinet Member for Resources at the borough council said he expected the grants would help some of the businesses that had slipped through the net.

The local authority has already handed out more than £20 million to local firms as part of the Government-backed coronavirus grants scheme.

The new cash pot is aimed at businesses with high property-related costs who have suffered a substantial drop in income as a result of Covid-19 but could not access the existing schemes.

In particular the scheme will help:

    • Small businesses in shared offices or workspaces, which do not have their own business rates assessment
    • Regular market traders who do not have their own business rates assessment
    • Bed and Breakfasts which pay council tax instead of business rates
    • Charity properties in receipt of charitable business rates relief

Councillor Smith, said: “We are keen to ensure all businesses who are suffering in these desperately difficult times get the help they are entitled to. We know some of them have slipped through the net of support. We were sorry to disappoint those who have not been eligible for previous funding, so I am really pleased they will have the opportunity to apply for this money.

“To some of our hardest hit this could be a chance to protect the future of employees and the difference between survival or going under.”

Details of criteria and how to apply for the funding in June will be made available shortly from www.staffordbc.gov.uk/business-support-coronavirus

Any business who has benefitted from the existing coronavirus grants or the business rates holiday will not be eligible to apply.
