Mayor will be bowled over by Stafford park birthday celebrations

The award-winning Victoria Park in Stafford will be celebrating a 110th anniversary with a family fun event this weekend.

The park in the centre of the town will be marking the landmark birthday of the bowling green with music, activities, craft stalls and food on offer.

The popular park was reopened late last year following a National Lottery Heritage funded £2.5 million restoration - but Covid restrictions unfortunately prevented a traditional ‘official opening’ ceremony.

Now Stafford Borough Council and the team behind the park’s Albert’s café have organised a range of events – and on Saturday (11th) they will mark the 110th anniversary of the bowling green side of the park.

The day gets underway at 11am with a re-creation of the 1911 bowls competition between a team led by Stafford Borough Mayor, Councillor Tony Nixon, who will be taking on borough council staff. The event will include Staffordshire Brass Band performing on the restored bandstand, a celebration of poetry and an artisan craft market – showcasing the work of local artists. There will also be hands-on craft activities for youngsters and their families.

And Alberts Cafe will be selling food and drink throughout the day, including their popular wood fired pizza, as well as offering an Alberts Edwardian Afternoon Tea experience.

The event will mark the start of National Heritage Open Days Week, which runs from 10th-19th September.  A further event which was to go ahead on 19 September has now been rescheduled to take place in October with the launch of the Victoria Park History Project alongside Staffordshire Archives and Heritage.

Last month Victoria Park, which has held a Green Flag for more than a dozen years as one of the best open spaces in the country, hosted a bank holiday music event throughout the weekend.
