Residents and visitors are invited to a series of open days in Stafford Borough with a difference.
The crematorium and cemeteries managed by the Borough Council are running the open days this week.
People will be able to go behind the scenes at the Stafford Crematorium, the 160 year old Eccleshall Road Cemetery, and Stone Cemetery.
Visitors will be able to view the state of the art cremators and burial systems at the crematorium on Tixall Road, Stafford. There will be a guided tour of the unique woodland and burial areas at Stone. And you will be able to take a look inside the two chapels at Eccleshall Road which have been unused since the 1960s.
The open days are part of National Cemeteries Week which runs until Saturday 18 May and are being organised by the council along with the Friends of Stafford Cemeteries group.
Hundreds of people have attended previous open days at the cemeteries over previous years. This year the dates will be:
Tuesday 14 May 10am to 2pm – Eccleshall Road Cemetery, Stafford ST16 1PD
Thursday 16 May 10am to 2pm – Stone Cemetery, Stafford Road, Stone ST15 0BQ
Saturday 18 May 10am to 3pm – Stafford Crematorium ST18 0XZ
People will also be able to hear about the plans to renovate the two 160 year old chapels on the Eccleshall Road site.
The ‘Friends’ group are looking to raise awareness of their work in preserving local cemeteries as places of remembrance, history and nature.
