Staff at Stafford Borough Council have come up with a novel Christmas idea to raise money for the local Katharine House Hospice appeal.
With the traditional office Christmas meal and night out off the menu because of Covid-19, the local authority workers decided to donate what they would have spent on their festive fayre to the hospice.
Employees have come up with a three-course menu where you can donate your starter for £4, a main meal for £8 or dessert at £5. Or they even have the option of donating all three courses for £15.
Katharine House announced a few weeks ago that they were in financial difficulties because of the ongoing effects of Covid-19 and began a £1 million appeal. Now the 200 or so council employees have set themselves a target of £500 to reach within the next few weeks.
Council Chief Executive, Tim Clegg, said: “Katharine House Hospice is a charity that is very close to the hearts of my colleagues. Many have received tremendous support from the charity and were keen to help out with the difficult financial situation the hospice has found itself in because of coronavirus.
“Normally, during December, most teams across the council would have organised Christmas meals and nights out with their workmates – but with Covid-19 these are unlikely to happen. So, it was a great idea for staff to donate what they would have spent on their traditional Christmas meal out together, dinner and drinks, to help KHH.”
Mary Worsdale, from Katharine House Hospice, said: “This is another wonderful idea from the staff at Stafford Borough Council. We really can’t thank each and every one of them enough for everything that they are doing for us!
“We are really thrilled and heartened by the amazing ways people in the community are really getting behind us in these extremely challenging times. There are some absolutely fantastic things going on, and people are making huge personal commitments to support our hospice in raising such vital funds. “
The local authority has stressed the initiative is not just open to their employees – and have invited other workers to join them in donating their Christmas meals as well.
