Stafford Borough Council and Freedom Leisure have confirmed a programme of significant investment across several key community venues, supported by £200,000 from a government fund.
The UK Shared Prosperity Funding will enable a series of improvement works designed to enhance visitor experience, modernise facilities and ensure the long‑term sustainability of much‑valued public spaces across the borough.
At the Ancient High House, works will focus on improving accessibility and presentation through new carpeting on key stairways and gallery areas, alongside upgraded display infrastructure to support exhibitions and heritage interpretation.
The Gatehouse Theatre will benefit from a range of enhancements, including improvements to building access and security, new carpeting on major stairways, upgraded external lighting and refreshed seating. Energy efficiency measures such as new destratification fans within the MET theatre and Main Auditorium will help balance internal temperatures, minimising heat loss and energy demand while maximising the efficiency of both the building and the HVAC systems leading to better environmental management within the venue.
At Rowley Park Sports Stadium, investment will support the installation of new LED lighting for the 3G pitch and replacement goal posts, ensuring high‑quality facilities for sports clubs and community users.
Stafford Leisure Centre will see upgrades to its Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems within fitness spaces that include replacement Air Conditioning units, the installation of new destratification fans and integration of smart controls to improve the environmental conditions for customers and efficiencies of running the HVAC. Further improvements will see a redesign of the wet‑side entrance lobby to enhance customer flow and increased vanity provision.
Councillor Gillian Pardesi, Cabinet Member for Leisure at the Borough Council (pictured with Theatre manager, Gary Stevens, and Alistair Gould) said: "The UK Shared Prosperity Fund has given us the opportunity to invest in the buildings and facilities that matter most to our residents. Working closely with Freedom Leisure, we are ensuring that our cultural, heritage and leisure venues continue to offer safe, modern and enjoyable spaces for everyone. These improvements not only support community wellbeing but also reflect our commitment to maintaining high‑quality amenities across the borough."
Alistair Gould, Area Manager for Freedom Leisure in Stafford said: "We are delighted to be working with Stafford Borough Council to deliver this important programme of improvements. These upgrades will enhance the experience for all our customers, supporting our ongoing commitment to provide high‑quality, accessible and sustainable leisure and cultural facilities for the local community. This investment allows us to modernise key areas across several well‑loved venues, ensuring they remain welcoming and fit for the future."
