Work is underway to demolish the old Wilko’s store in Stafford.

Stafford Borough Council purchased the building as part of their regeneration plans for the town centre - with the site earmarked for a potential expansion of the local college.

And the council has stressed that more than 70 car parking spaces - including disabled bays - will still be available, and the public toilets remain open.

The demolition was approved by members of the council’s planning committee this week (Wednesday 8 July).

The acquisition and demolition have been funded by central government with work expected to take around 12 weeks to be completed.

Earlier this year the council launched their blueprint for the town centre which sets out the transformation of the area including a new market hall with food, drink and entertainment offer, as well as retail, commercial and residential opportunities.
