A view of a new playground for young people in Stafford which is part of multi-million-pound revamp plans has been revealed.

The first phase of work is expected to start later this year on a much improved and inclusive play area for Rowley Park Sports Stadium. Preliminary work has already seen the main gates and entrance to the park enhanced - with improvements to the pathway ongoing.

Now Stafford Borough Council has released images of how the area will look once work has been completed in Spring 2027. Award-winning outdoor playground equipment specialists, Wicksteed, will carry out the revamp.

The £1.2m set aside for the initial stages of the scheme is being funded by money that developers provide to local authorities to deliver benefits to the community, as part of house building or other developments.

A new learn to ride facility, fitness equipment, seating, and woodland planting are also planned following feedback from local people and park users.

Hundreds of people shared their views online, and via face-to-face meetings, about their priorities for the park refurbishment. The council visited schools to find out what local children want to see - and discussed options with representatives from disability groups to ensure a more inclusive play park with accessible facilities for youngsters.

Future proposals will be drawn up when more funding for the project becomes available with wheeled sports area, community sports hub and changing rooms with new public toilets all earmarked as potential additions to the park. The scheme would also see new junior tennis courts, walking routes, picnic places and improved car park.

Thousands of youngsters, families and sportspeople use the park - which is also home to an artificial football pitch, athletics track, and bowling green.

Councillor Gillian Pardesi, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said “It is exciting to see what the play area will look like in the Spring of next year. We have a great track record of providing popular destination parks across the borough and I expect Rowley Park Sports Stadium to be no exception.

“This will be a venue where families can enjoy spending time, where people want to come for leisure and sporting activities, and a place where our residents can be proud of.”
