    What can I put in my brown bin?

    You can check Recycling and Waste - Know Your Bins for the correct materials to put in your brown bin.

    Please make sure your brown bin is out for collection by 7am on your collection day which is the same day as your blue bin.

    Can I have more than one brown bin?

    Yes, you can sign up for multiple bins. Each brown bin at your property will be charged at £36 per bin for 2022. Delivery of additional brown bins will have a one off charge of £25 in addition to the annual charge.

    Please call our Contact Centre on 01785 619402 if you have already subscribed for at least one brown bin and would like to add an additional bin. Do not use the online form. This will ensure that this information is logged correctly against your address.

    I already have a permit on my brown bin, why am I being asked to purchase another one?

    The current permit on your bin(s) is for the calendar year 2021. The new permit is for calendar year 2022,  the charge remains the same at £36 per brown bin.

    Please note: if you do not wish to continue your subscription your current scheduled service will stop after 31 December 2021 and you do not need to take any further action.

    What do I do when I receive my 2022 brown bin permit?

    Your permit for 2022 will be a different colour. Please remove your 2021 permit and replace it with your 2022 permit as soon as you receive it. The collection crews know which bins should be collected until the end of 2021.

    Please ensure that your permit is placed on the rear of the brown bin under the handles.

    How will I know when to renew my brown bin permit?

    Each brown bin permit is for a calendar year from 1 January to 31 December.  The permit will automatically expire on 31 December each year, therefore if you do not wish to continue with the service you do not need to take any further action.

    If you have registered your email address and/or mobile phone number with us you will receive a reminder notification towards the end of each year.  The expiry date is also displayed on your brown bin permit as a reminder.  

    If you do not have an email address or mobile phone number registered with us, you can either log on to or call 01785 619402 from November each year to register for the following year.

    I’ve just signed up for the first time, why can’t my brown bin be emptied straight away?

    As per the Terms and Conditions, your brown bin service will start on the first scheduled collection day in 2022 (the same day as your blue bin and bag) that occurs after the initial five working days following sign up.

    This five day period enables checks and integration to take place. There could be up to a further five days before the permit is delivered but your information will be on the crew's computer system and they will empty your bin whilst you wait for the permit to arrive.

    I am planning on moving house in 2022, what happens to my brown bin permit then?

    If your house move is within the Borough then you can transfer your brown bin permit free of charge, just let us know the new address and the date that you are moving.

    If you are moving outside of Stafford Borough, no refund will be available for any subscription that has been paid for that calendar year.

    What can I do with my garden waste if I don’t use the brown bin?

    Home Compost – we support a reduced cost home composting scheme, details of which can be found at

    Household Waste Recycling Centres - garden waste can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres at St Albans Road, Stafford or Beacon Road, Stone.

    Why do you charge for garden waste?

    Councils are not required by law to provide garden waste collections. A charge to empty the bin enables the service to be financially self sufficient and ensures that we can continue to provide the service rather than it being stopped.

    We receive no income from the sale of the compost. 

    Will I get a reduction in my Council Tax if I don’t sign up to the new service?

    No. Council Tax goes towards paying for a wide range of services provided by the Borough Council, County Council, Police, Fire and Parish Council services.

    How does the collection crew know who has paid?

    You will be issued with a permit to stick to your bin to show you have paid. The information is also on the in-cab computer on the collection vehicle.

    Can I pay monthly?

    No. The annual charge is required to be paid in full and covers the period 1 January - 31 December 2022 regardless of when in the year you sign up.

    I only want the collection for six months, is that ok?

    Payment is for the full 12 month period and there are no pro rata discounts or refunds given.

    Can I share a bin with a neighbour?

    Yes. You can share the cost of the brown bin with a neighbour. However, you will need to decide who will be responsible for paying the charge and who will be responsible for putting the bin out to avoid a missed collection.

    I don’t want the service, what do I do with my brown bin?

    You can keep the brown bin for use around the garden or garage. We will not be removing unwanted brown bins at this time as they are relevant to the property and need to be present should there be a change of occupier who may wish to subscribe to the service.  Also, it is important that brown bins remain at properties should they need to be used as part of a future service change.

    I am not receiving my Password Reset email

    If you have requested a password reset but have not received an email this is because either:

    • You are not registered and will therefore need to register
    • You do not have an email address registered on your account, or it is incorrect
    • The online account is Inactive (not been used for some months)

    To resolve this you will need to email with your name, address and email address and we will resolve the issue and send you a new password.
